Event Description

Have you ever wanted to learn how to use a sewing machine? This three-week course will introduce you to basic machine sewing and pattern techniques. Begin your sewing journey or brush up on the basics before taking advantage of our makerspace to create your own projects. Bring along 1m of cotton fabric (cut from the roll) or 3 x fabric fat quarters or metric fat flats to use for sewing projects.

Week one – Introductory to sewing machines, how they work and how to set them up. Also a look at the to different machine stitches, get a feel for the machines and create a sewing sampler.
Week two – Introductory pattern making, how to draft a simple pattern from an existing piece of clothing, placing patterns and how to cut from a pattern. – Sewing project: microwave bowl caddy or potholder.
Week three – Introduction to the Overlocker. Second sewing project: cushion cover (require 1m cotton fabric of your choice)
Includes time for a question-and-answer session. Receive sewing machine licence for library makerspace at the end of this lesson.
